It has been a year since my solo exhibition at the Marugame Museum. In this new chapter, four monumental works form the core, accompanied by drawings born of fire and paintings shaped by pigment, alongside twenty pieces created in a spirit of release—works where the hand follows the unguarded movement of the heart. Here, the act of making becomes a dialogue between the body and chance, between impulse and form. On the opening day, I spoke in a gallery talk about the path from last year to the present, about the currents that guided these works, and then listened in turn, as questions from the audience drew the conversation toward unexpected depths.
Among them, one question lingered: from a student of my alma mater, Sakaide High School, who asked about the relationship between art and language. The weight of her inquiry startled me, for it touches upon a question that has accompanied artists and critics across centuries. My reply was not an answer so much as a tracing—how works of art have long been examined, interpreted, and given voice through historians and writers. In that current, I suggested, even when words seem secondary to creation itself, they remain essential, for they give another life to what has been made.
Later, she told me it was the word “Noise” in the title that compelled her to enter. The resonance of that single word moved her to step inside, to raise her hand, to ask. In her courage, I saw how language itself can open doors, how a word can summon one into the realm of art.
“Noise”—I chose it for its generative power. What seems alien, discordant, or out of place often becomes the seed of discovery. Art, I believe, always carries its noise, and within that disturbance lies the potential for new horizons. Whether through the ashen black of soot or the vivid colors of pigment, the underlying theme remains unchanged: life itself.
For one month these works will inhabit the space. May they invite you to listen for the noise within silence, to glimpse the fragile and inexhaustible pulse of life.
